GLP-1 drugs Ozempic and Wegovy linked to 30% lower breast cancer risk in large US study
A retrospective observational study of 111,646 women aged 45‑80 in the United States found that users of GLP‑1 receptor agonists such as Ozempic or Wegovy developed breast cancer about 30 % less often than non‑users. The analysis, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting and published in JCO Oncology Practice, adjusted for age, ethnicity, BMI, breast density and diabetes status, and the association persisted in matched‑pair comparisons.
Researchers caution that the study shows correlation, not causation, and note missing data on specific GLP‑1 formulations, treatment duration, genetic risk factors, tumor subtypes and stages. They propose a forthcoming multicenter clinical trial to test whether GLP‑1 therapy can truly reduce breast‑cancer risk in high‑risk women. The findings add to growing interest in metabolic drugs for cancer prevention, though further evidence is required before clinical recommendations can change.
