GLP-1 drugs set to reshape sugar demand and spur $2 trillion market growth

A CoBank report finds U.S. sugar deliveries remain robust despite widespread consumer intentions to cut added sugars. The analysis warns that emerging health trends, especially the expanding use of GLP-1 receptor agonists for weight loss, could depress food and beverage spending by $30 billion by 2030 and $55 billion by 2034, potentially shrinking grocery baskets by up to 31 % among active users.

Separate market research projects the global GLP-1 market to rise from $58.4 billion in 2025 to $212.73 billion by 2035, driven by a 13.8 % compound annual growth rate. Growth is fueled by the drugs’ expanding role beyond type‑2 diabetes to obesity management, cardiovascular risk reduction, and other metabolic conditions. North America, led by the United States, dominates the market thanks to high disease prevalence, advanced medical infrastructure, and early adoption of long‑acting GLP‑1 formulations that improve patient convenience and adherence.
