GLP-1 drugs show potential benefits for bipolar disorder and weight maintenance
New research suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly used for diabetes and weight loss, may offer mental health benefits for individuals with bipolar disorder. A large-scale Swedish study led by Griffith University analyzed data from nearly 15,000 people with bipolar disorder over 15 years. The findings indicated that patients using semaglutide experienced a 21% lower risk of psychiatric hospitalization compared to periods when they were not using the medication.
Researchers suggest that GLP-1 signaling might protect the brain by reducing inflammation and cellular stress, which are linked to bipolar disorder. This could provide a new therapeutic pathway for mood stability.
In a separate development regarding weight management, Enveda is developing an experimental oral molecule, ENV-308, designed to mimic metabolic signals produced during exercise. This candidate aims to prevent the weight regain often observed after discontinuing GLP-1 treatments. While Phase I trials in healthy volunteers showed good tolerability and potential effects on the hormone leptin, Phase II trials will be required to confirm its efficacy in human weight loss maintenance.
