GLP-1 market shifts as Novo Nordisk partners with Vivani Medical

The GLP-1 medication market is seeing significant strategic and scientific developments. Novo Nordisk has entered a partnership with Vivani Medical in an effort to challenge Eli Lilly’s market position. While Eli Lilly has gained ground with its Zepbound and Mounjaro treatments, Novo Nordisk is focusing on patient convenience through the development of oral pill formats for Wegovy.

In parallel, researchers at UC Berkeley have identified a potential alternative or complementary treatment for obesity and diabetes. A study published in Science Advances suggests that the compound 5-tetradecyloxy-2-furoic acid (TOFA) may address limitations of current GLP-1 therapies. While GLP-1 drugs primarily work by limiting calorie intake—which can lead to muscle loss—TOFA appears to increase energy expenditure by boosting the metabolic rate.

In mouse experiments, TOFA was shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose control while allowing for fat loss without significant loss of lean muscle mass. This compound acts as an ACC inhibitor, blocking the production of lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides.
