GLP-1 medications and dietary strategies for obesity management

The rise of GLP-1 agonist medications, such as semaglutide, has transformed the approach to treating obesity by mimicking hormones that regulate appetite and blood sugar. While clinical studies, including those published in the ‘New England Journal of Medicine’, show significant weight loss results, these drugs can cause gastrointestinal side effects and weight regain once treatment stops.

Medical experts, including endocrinologist Dr. Selma Jusufović, suggest that obesity management is evolving, with predictions that such therapies may become commonplace within a decade. However, there is growing interest in whether dietary choices can replicate these pharmacological effects.

Scientific research indicates that certain foods can naturally stimulate the release of GLP-1 and PYY hormones. Consuming soluble and fermentable fibers—found in oats, barley, legumes, flax, and chia seeds—can create a gel-like structure in the digestive tract that slows gastric emptying. Additionally, high protein intake can suppress hunger hormones like ghrelin while promoting satiety through the thermic effect of food and direct signaling to the brain.
