GLP-1 medications drive changes in plastic surgery and body composition
The widespread use of GLP-1 medications for weight loss is significantly impacting both medical research and the field of plastic surgery. Clinical observations indicate that approximately 80% of patients seeking abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) consultations have achieved weight loss through GLP-1 therapy. This has created a growing demand for specialized procedures, such as circumferential abdominoplasty, to address extensive skin laxity and abdominal muscle issues resulting from massive weight loss.
Regarding body composition, research involving 486 individuals treated with GLP-1 or dual GLP-1/GIP agonists suggests that the weight loss is primarily fat-based. A study conducted over 14 months found that while participants lost an average of 9.9% of their body mass, approximately 80-85% of that loss was fat tissue. Skeletal muscle mass decreased by only about 5%, indicating that the relative proportion of muscle in the body was largely preserved or even increased in many participants. These findings address concerns regarding disproportionate muscle wasting during rapid weight loss induced by these drugs.
