GLP-1 medications expand therapeutic uses and impact skin health

GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, are significantly expanding their clinical utility beyond type 2 diabetes and weight management. Recent research from Yale University suggests these medications may influence biological pathways related to cardiovascular health, addiction medicine, and metabolic disease management.

In the United States, Gallup data indicates that medication usage has reached record highs due to increased manufacturing, expanding insurance coverage, and a shift in the cultural perception of obesity. However, researchers at UT Southwestern have noted a rapid rise in use among adolescents and young adults, prompting calls for longitudinal studies regarding long-term safety and developmental impacts.

The rapid weight loss associated with these drugs has also led to dermatological concerns. Medical professionals have identified “Ozempic face,” a term describing skin laxity, hollow cheeks, and increased wrinkles resulting from the loss of facial fat and collagen. Experts recommend proactive skincare routines to help preserve skin quality during significant weight reduction.
