GLP-1 medications face scrutiny over side effects and adolescent use
Research is exploring whether probiotics could mitigate the gastrointestinal side effects associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists, which are widely used to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes. In vitro studies focusing on Bacillus clausii have shown the potential to produce short-chain fatty acids—such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate—and stimulate the growth of beneficial intestinal microorganisms.
Simultaneously, the rise of these weight-loss medications has raised concerns regarding their impact on adolescents. Social media saturation of idealized body images linked to these drugs has been associated with body image distortions. Data indicates a significant increase in use among minors; in the United States, physicians prescribed approximately 33,000 prescriptions for Wegovy and Zepbound to individuals under the age of 18 last year, according to an analysis by Komodo Health.
