GLP-1 medications linked to lower breast cancer risk and new oral pill cuts diabetes and weight

Observational studies presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago suggest that patients using GLP‑1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy have a 30% lower likelihood of being diagnosed with breast cancer, a 10% lower rate of tumor progression, and a 6% improvement in five‑year overall survival. The most extensive analysis, led by Dr. Elizabeth McDonald of the University of Pennsylvania, examined medical records of over 110,000 overweight women aged 45‑80 and highlighted the need for further research to confirm causality.

In a separate development, AstraZeneca’s orally administered GLP‑1 compound elecoglipron demonstrated significant reductions in blood glucose and body weight in the phase 2B SOLSTICE trial. The international study enrolled 406 participants with type 2 diabetes across nine countries and showed consistent glucose lowering across all dose levels without the fasting requirements that accompany many existing GLP‑1 therapies.
