GLP-1 medications linked to nail and hair side effects

International research studies have identified potential new side effects associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, which are commonly used for weight loss and type 2 diabetes management.

A study led by Dr. Charles Taïeb, involving participants from France, the United States, Brazil, and Mexico, found a significant correlation between these medications and nail issues. Specifically, 39 percent of GLP-1 users reported onycholysis (the separation of the nail plate from the nail bed), compared to only 9 percent in a control group. Additionally, 46 percent of users reported nail discoloration, versus 17 percent in the control group. While researchers noted that many participants had existing nail issues prior to treatment, the frequency remained significantly higher among users even after accounting for rapid weight loss and nutritional deficiencies.

Separate research published in The BMJ by a team from the University of Pennsylvania suggests a potential link between GLP-1 medications and increased risks of alopecia (hair loss). While rapid weight loss is a suspected factor, researchers are investigating whether biological factors related to hereditary hair loss also play a role.
