GLP-1 medications linked to rapid facial aging and health risks

The use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, for rapid weight loss is raising medical concerns regarding facial aging and off-label usage risks.

Medical professionals have identified a phenomenon termed ‘Ozempic face,’ characterized by accelerated facial aging due to the rapid loss of subcutaneous fat. This loss of volume in the cheeks, temples, and eye area, combined with a reduction in collagen and elastin, can lead to deep hollowing, skin laxity along the jaw and neck, and a facial appearance that looks significantly older.

Pharmacists have also warned against the use of these medications by individuals already at a healthy weight. While effective for chronic weight management in obese patients, using these drugs for quick cosmetic weight loss carries risks including severe dehydration, muscle loss, and pancreatitis. Experts note that these medications are designed for indefinite use, and abrupt discontinuation can result in regaining a significant portion of the lost weight.
