GLP-1 medications linked to reduced infection risk and improved sleep apnea
Recent studies suggest that GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound), may offer health benefits beyond weight loss and metabolic management.
Research published in Nature Communications indicates a potential link between GLP-1 use and a reduced risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis (TB). By analyzing medical records from 2017 to 2025, researchers found that individuals using these medications for type 2 diabetes were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with TB compared to those on other common diabetes treatments.
Additionally, clinical data published in JAMA Otolaryngology highlights the impact of tirzepatide on obstructive sleep apnea. In the phase 3 SURMOUNT-OSA trials, patients treated with tirzepatide experienced a reduction in the apnea-hypopnea index, with 42% to 50% of participants achieving complete symptom remission. The improvement is attributed to both weight loss and the reduction of fat tissue in the neck, throat, and tongue, which helps maintain open airways during sleep.
