GLP-1 medications: New studies highlight sexual function and patient concerns
Recent studies and data analyses are shedding new light on the side effects and patient interests regarding GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy.
A small prospective study published in the European Journal of Endocrinology involving 25 obese women found a significant improvement in overall sexual function after three months of treatment. Notably, researchers could not statistically attribute this improvement to weight loss, changes in body image, or reductions in anxiety and depression, suggesting the underlying mechanism remains unknown.
In a separate analysis of social media trends, a study by the consultancy Winnin revealed a disconnect between content creation and patient demand. While creators frequently focus on aesthetic side effects—such as skin aging (23.3%) and loss of facial volume (14.5%)—actual users show much higher engagement with topics like lack of energy and bad breath. Data shows that lack of energy leads in average views per video, indicating that patients are actively seeking information on more intimate or uncomfortable physiological effects rather than purely cosmetic ones.
