GLP-1 medications show expanded benefits and new clinical risks

Recent clinical studies have highlighted both expanded therapeutic benefits and specific risks associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Research presented at the European Respiratory Society congress indicates these medications may reduce asthma exacerbations by 40 percent and decrease hospitalizations for patients with bipolar disorder by 21 percent. Additionally, studies suggest potential benefits for patients with COPD and chronic kidney disease.

However, new findings published in ‘Anaesthesia’ warn of surgical risks. Patients using GLP-1 drugs face an 11-fold higher risk of gastric regurgitation or aspiration during general anesthesia compared to non-users. Medical professionals advise that patients must inform anesthesiologists of their medication use.

Furthermore, a study from the University of Washington School of Medicine involving over 333,000 veterans found that discontinuing GLP-1 treatment is linked to a loss of cardiovascular protection. Patients who maintained continuous treatment saw an 18 percent lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events compared to those using sulfonylureas.
