GLP-1 medications show varying weight loss efficacy in diabetes patients

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, often used for treating type 2 diabetes and weight loss, do not produce the same results for all patients. While these medications are highly effective at lowering blood sugar and improving A1C levels, some individuals are classified as weight loss nonresponders.

Medical experts suggest that a common benchmark for a nonresponder is an individual who loses less than 5 percent of their total body weight while on the medication. Research indicates this is a significant occurrence; for instance, one clinical trial showed that 32.2 percent of adults with type 2 diabetes lost less than 5 percent of their weight even after using semaglutide at its highest approved dosage for over a year.

Factors such as the duration of type 2 diabetes or the concurrent use of insulin may influence responsiveness. For those not seeing weight loss results, healthcare providers may suggest switching to a different GLP-1 medication or adding supplemental treatments to enhance efficacy.
