GLP-1 receptor agonists show potential anti-inflammatory benefits
Research suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) therapy may provide benefits for inflammatory conditions beyond weight loss and glycemic control.
A retrospective cohort study conducted at Johns Hopkins Hospital examined patients with idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS), a rare condition involving progressive airway narrowing. The study found that patients using GLP-1RAs experienced an increased surgery-free interval, rising from 15.0 to 25.7 months. This effect appeared independent of weight loss or changes in body mass index, suggesting the drugs may have a direct anti-inflammatory impact on the disease.
In a separate review involving patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and comorbid obesity, GLP-1RAs were found to promote weight loss comparable to the general population. While gastrointestinal issues were the most common adverse effects, studies reported no significant differences in hospitalization, surgery, or steroid use, with some instances of improved outcomes. The research highlights the potential for these therapies to address obesity-related complications in IBD through both metabolic and theorized anti-inflammatory mechanisms.
