GLP-1 receptor agonists show potential for IBD and liver protection

Recent medical research highlights expanding therapeutic benefits for GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, beyond blood sugar and weight management.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 studies involving 16,242 participants indicates that these medications can improve clinical outcomes for individuals with both obesity and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The findings suggest that treatment can lead to weight loss while simultaneously reducing the risk of hospitalizations and surgical interventions.

Additionally, data from the TriNetX network published in the journal Obesity suggests these drugs may offer liver-protective effects. Observations over a 17-month period indicate a lower risk of severe hepatic events in patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity compared to those using sitagliptin. Researchers are investigating whether these benefits result directly from effects on endothelial and immune cells rather than solely from weight loss.
