GLP-1 drugs show potential for addiction treatment and food industry shifts

GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, originally developed for type 2 diabetes and obesity, are showing potential for treating other conditions, including alcohol use disorder. Clinical observations and studies, such as a randomized trial published in The Lancet, have noted a significant reduction in alcohol consumption among patients using these drugs.

Beyond clinical applications, the rise of GLP-1 drugs is significantly impacting the food industry. As users experience increased satiety and reduced food intake, consumer habits are shifting toward smaller portions with higher nutritional density, specifically focusing on protein and fiber. In Spain, estimates suggest over 501,000 people are using these treatments, forcing food manufacturers to adapt product formats and nutritional profiles to meet changing consumer demands.
