GLP-1 users increase fitness spending and show behavioral shifts
New research indicates that individuals using GLP-1 medications are significantly increasing their investment in health and wellness. A study by the Consumer Collective found that GLP-1 users spend an average of $449 per month on fitness, nearly four times the $120 monthly average reported by non-users. This demographic is more likely to pay for gym memberships, personal training, supplements, and recovery services. Additionally, users are shifting food budgets toward higher-quality, high-protein groceries while consuming less alcohol and eating out less frequently.
Beyond physical spending, emerging evidence suggests these drugs may have broader behavioral impacts. While originally intended for appetite suppression and weight loss, reports indicate that GLP-1 receptor agonists may influence reward suppression and motivational salience. Some users have reported reduced compulsions regarding alcohol, smoking, shopping, and other reward-seeking behaviors. Researchers suggest the drugs may interfere with the neurological process that drives the compulsion to pursue rewarding objects, potentially extending their utility beyond simple weight management.
