The use of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, for weight reduction has become a significant point of medical and social discussion. These drugs mimic the body's natural hormones to promote satiety and slow gastric emptying. While medications like Mounjaro (Eli Lilly) and Wegovy (Novo Nordisk) are specifically indicated for weight management, others like Ozempic are primarily approved for type-2 diabetes.

In the United States, reports indicate a high volume of prescriptions, including over 1.1 million without documented medical indications. In Europe, Novo Nordisk has expanded its offerings, including the introduction of Wegovy in tablet form in Germany.

Parallel to the rise of prescription GLP-1 drugs, there is growing concern regarding weight management dietary supplements. In Germany, manufacturers of such supplements only need to register them with the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety; there is no legal requirement for a formal safety or quality check before they enter the market. Experts warn that many supplements lack scientific efficacy data or clear ingredient labeling, posing potential risks to consumers.
