GLP-1 weight-loss drugs drive shifts in fashion and food industries
The rise of GLP-1 weight-loss medications, such as Ozempic and semaglutide, is driving significant shifts in both the fashion and food industries in the United States.
In the fashion sector, major brands are reducing their inventory of larger clothing sizes. H&M confirmed it has discontinued 3XL and 4XL sizes due to lower demand. Data from Edited shows H&M’s share of XXL sizes dropped from 13.3% to approximately 10.3%, while smaller sizes from XS to L saw growth. Similar trends were observed at Mango, which saw its share of larger dress sizes drop significantly, and at Anthropologie.
In the food industry, Groupe Bel, the producer of Babybel and The Laughing Cow, reports that GLP-1 drugs are transforming consumer behavior. As these medications reduce appetite, consumers are prioritizing nutrient density and protein intake to maintain muscle mass. This shift has led to increased demand for smaller portions and high-protein dairy products. To meet changing market needs, Groupe Bel is investing $200 million to double production capacity at its facility in South Dakota.
