GLP-1 weight loss drugs linked to increased hair loss risk

Recent studies have identified an increased risk of hair loss among users of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, such as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Ozempic, and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound. Research indicates that the risk of hair loss in patients using these drugs is 37% to 68% higher compared to those using traditional diabetes medications like Metformin or SGLT-2 inhibitors.

Medical experts suggest that this hair loss is likely not caused by the chemical composition of the drugs themselves, but rather by telogen effluvium. This is a temporary condition triggered by the physiological stress of rapid weight loss, significant calorie reduction, and potential deficiencies in proteins, vitamins, or minerals.

While there have been claims regarding the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes, clinical evidence directly linking GLP-1 drugs to the loss of these specific hairs remains limited. Experts note that because eyebrows and eyelashes follow similar growth cycles to scalp hair, they could theoretically be affected by systemic physiological stress, but current data does not confirm a direct causal link.
