GLP-1 weight-loss drugs linked to Nobel predictions and anti-aging potential
Research into GLP-1 hormones, which underpin popular weight-loss medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro, is being highlighted as a strong candidate for the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Experts suggest that the discovery of hormones regulating satiety, such as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), has had an enormous worldwide clinical impact.
In addition to their weight-loss benefits, drugmakers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have reported findings suggesting these medications may slow biological aging. Data from molecular “aging clocks” indicate that overweight or diabetic patients using GLP-1 drugs showed a reduction in biological age of approximately two to three years compared to placebo groups. Some scientists suggest these findings could position GLP-1 drugs as “geroprotectors,” medications that potentially slow or reverse biological aging processes.
