GLP-1 weight-loss drugs linked to rare brain disorder and eating disorder risks

A new study published in Clinical Nutrition has linked popular GLP-1 weight-loss medications, including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, to Wernicke-encephalopathy. This rare and potentially life-threatening brain condition is caused by a severe deficiency in vitamin B1 (thiamine). Researchers identified 15 cases between 2014 and 2024, noting that the drugs' tendency to cause gastrointestinal issues and significant appetite suppression can lead to acute nutritional deficiencies.

Patients in the study reported symptoms such as confusion, altered mental states, and difficulty walking, typically appearing four to five months after beginning treatment. While clinicians note the condition remains very rare relative to the millions of users, they emphasize the logical mechanism behind the risk.

In a separate concern, medical professionals are calling for prominent warning labels on these medications, similar to those found on cigarette packaging. This push comes as providers warn of a rising risk of patients developing or returning to restrictive eating disorders due to the drugs' effects.
