GLP-1 weight loss drugs linked to relationship shifts

The use of GLP-1 medications, such as Mounjaro and Wegovy, is being linked to shifts in personal relationships, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as ‘Ozempic divorces’. While there is no specific research on how these drugs impact marriages, the term draws parallels to bariatric surgery statistics, where divorce rates are higher than in the general population.

Case studies indicate that significant weight loss can lead individuals to reassess their lives and relationships. For some, the physical transformation provides the confidence to leave unhealthy or unsupportive partnerships. However, experts note that weight loss does not automatically resolve emotional issues. While successful treatment can improve relationships by changing lifestyle habits, it can also expose pre-existing problems or create new challenges, such as body image issues or difficulty adjusting to a partner's new lifestyle and priorities.
