GLP-1 weight loss medications and the risks of rapid weight regain
As interest in GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy grows for weight management and type 2 diabetes treatment, concerns regarding weight regain after stopping treatment have emerged. Research indicates that when users cease administration, the appetite-suppressing effects diminish, often leading to rapid weight gain. A review published in the British Medical Journal involving approximately 9,300 participants found that individuals stopping these medications regained weight four times faster than those who lost weight through diet and exercise alone. On average, patients lost 15 kilograms during treatment but regained about 10 kilograms within a year of stopping.
Due to costs and accessibility issues, some individuals are seeking natural alternatives available in pharmacies. These include berberine, which is studied for its potential impact on glucose and lipid metabolism via the AMPK enzyme, white mulberry leaf extract, Omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics. However, experts note that these supplements do not share the same mechanism of action as prescribed GLP-1 medications and should not be considered direct equivalents, though they may support a healthy lifestyle.
