GLP-1 weight loss drugs show fat reduction but pose maintenance challenges

Recent research and expert insights regarding GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide, highlight both the efficacy and the challenges of long-term weight management.

A study presented at the European Congress on Obesity involving 486 adults in Vienna suggests that 80-85% of weight lost during treatment comes from fat, while relative skeletal muscle mass is largely preserved. Researchers used bioelectrical impedance analysis to track these changes in patients receiving various GLP-1-based treatments.

Despite these benefits, maintaining weight loss after discontinuing the medication remains difficult. Experts note that while lifestyle changes like diet and exercise can help, many users experience increased hunger and weight regain once they stop. One review indicated that approximately 60 percent of weight lost by participants was regained following the cessation of GLP-1 usage. Common reasons for stopping the medication include intense side effects, high costs, or insurance coverage limitations.
