GLP-1 weight loss medications transform obesity treatment paradigm

The rapid rise of GLP-1 agonist medications, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, is shifting the paradigm of obesity treatment from a matter of individual discipline to a complex medical management of metabolic and hormonal factors.

In Portugal, the popularity of these drugs is evident, with Mounjaro exceeding one million euros in daily sales in September. While these treatments can lead to clinically significant weight loss, health experts emphasize that they should be part of a comprehensive approach including diet, physical activity, and professional medical supervision, as recommended by the World Health Organization.

Recent scientific studies have also explored the physiological side effects of these medications. One study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology noted reports of menstrual irregularities and anovulation (cycles without ovulation) among users. Conversely, another study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine observed that some women with pre-existing menstrual irregularities experienced a return of ovulation and increased cycle regularity following treatment. Medical professionals caution that these changes must be analyzed alongside other health factors and the weight loss process itself.
