GLP-1 weight‑loss drugs cut obesity‑related cancer risk by up to 58%

A large observational study of more than 229,000 obese adults without diabetes found that treatment with GLP‑1 receptor agonists—drugs originally approved for type‑2 diabetes and now widely used for weight loss—was associated with a 41% lower overall risk of cancers linked to obesity. The risk reduction was especially pronounced for endometrial cancer, which fell by 58%, and exceeded 50% for pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer and multiple myeloma.

Researchers said the protective effect is likely due partly to the weight loss achieved with GLP‑1 drugs, which mitigates inflammation, hormonal disruption and insulin resistance that promote tumor growth. They also noted that GLP‑1 receptors have been identified on certain cancer cells, suggesting a possible direct anti‑cancer mechanism. Dr Aparna Kamat of Houston Methodist Hospital emphasized, “A reduction of this magnitude in more than 229,000 people cannot go unnoticed,” while cautioning that further trials are needed to confirm causality and clarify how the drugs influence cancer biology.
