GLP‑1 drugs promote weight loss and appetite control, but show mixed effects on erectile health

GLP‑1 hormones, naturally produced in the small intestine after a meal, help regulate insulin release, blood sugar and satiety. Commercial GLP‑1 medications such as Ozempic (semaglutide) and Wegovy have become popular for rapid weight loss. Nutrition experts note that certain foods—eggs, nuts, whole grains, extra‑virgin olive oil and cruciferous vegetables—can naturally boost GLP‑1 secretion and support appetite control without medication.

Research on GLP‑1 drugs and male sexual function shows divergent findings. A secondary analysis of the REWIND trial (3,725 men with type 2 diabetes) suggested dulaglutide was linked to a slightly lower rate of erectile dysfunction, while a separate billing‑data study reported a higher incidence of erectile problems with semaglutide in non‑diabetic obese men. Weight loss itself improves erectile function, independent of drug type. Evidence on libido is scant; one controlled human study found no impact, and animal data remain inconclusive. Urologists emphasize that erectile difficulties may signal vascular disease and warrant medical evaluation.
