GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs drive new workplace benefits, retail battles and safety debates

GLP‑1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are being used before and after bariatric surgery to aid weight loss, improve metabolic health and address weight regain. Clinical practice shows they can complement surgery, but real‑world adherence remains low, with only 30‑50 % of patients staying on therapy after a year.

Health experts stress that treatment success should be measured by overall health improvements rather than scale numbers alone, recommending a holistic approach that includes diet, movement, mental health and, when appropriate, metabolic surgery. Concerns have also arisen about “microdosing” compounded GLP‑1 products, which lack FDA review and may pose safety risks.

Corporate America is responding to the surge in demand: Bank of America spends more than $250 million annually to cover GLP‑1 drugs for its 211,000 employees, pairing coverage with health‑coaching programs. Retail giants Walmart, Costco and Amazon are entering the market, offering prescriptions and related services to capture a growing consumer base.

Despite high public awareness, many consumers remain hesitant to use GLP‑1 therapies, citing safety worries and social stigma. Studies indicate that users of these drugs often face judgment, being perceived as taking a “shortcut” to weight loss. This cultural backlash coexists with ongoing research into the broader health benefits of GLP‑1 medications.
