GLP‑1 receptor agonists explored for psoriasis, eczema and wound healing

A review published in the journal Pharmaceutics summarizes emerging research on GLP‑1 receptor agonists—drugs originally approved for type‑2 diabetes and obesity—as potential treatments for inflammatory skin disorders and chronic wounds. The authors note that GLP‑1 receptors are present on immune cells, allowing the drugs to modulate inflammatory pathways, reduce cytokines such as TNF‑α, IL‑6 and IL‑17, and improve vascular endothelial function. Pre‑clinical and limited clinical observations suggest benefits in psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, inverse acne and the healing of long‑standing diabetic ulcers.

Researchers caution that current evidence is insufficient to replace established therapies. Dr Małgorzata Ponikowska of the University of Medical Sciences in Wrocław said, “Coraz więcej danych pokazuje, że mogą one modulować odpowiedź immunologiczną, a nie jedynie wpływać na metabolizm.” Further large‑scale trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety for dermatological and wound‑care applications.
