GLP‑1 Weight‑Loss Drugs and Diet Trends Raise Health Concerns

The growing popularity of GLP‑1 analogue drugs for rapid, cosmetic weight loss is prompting health warnings. Experts note that using these medications without medical supervision can cause hormonal imbalances, menstrual disturbances, and fertility issues, especially in women with normal body weight. They stress that GLP‑1 drugs are intended for diabetes and obesity treatment under professional guidance, not for achieving extreme thinness.

Separately, nutrition guidance emphasizes the glycemic index (GI) as a tool for managing blood‑sugar spikes in diabetes and insulin resistance. Low‑GI foods such as non‑starchy vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fermented dairy, and whole fruits can help moderate glucose responses, but portions, overall carbohydrate load, fiber, protein, and fat content also matter. Health professionals advise balanced meals—half vegetables, a quarter protein, and a quarter quality carbohydrates—to support stable glycaemia without relying solely on GI values.
