GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs approved in Scotland and shown to cut heart risk in autoimmune patients

A new study of more than 26,000 adults with obesity and an autoimmune disease found that treatment with GLP‑1 agonists such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide) was associated with substantially lower rates of venous thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism, emergency‑department visits and all‑cause mortality. “The key takeaway is that the potential benefits of GLP‑1 therapy may extend beyond the number on the scale,” said study author Amy Sheer, MD, MPH.

The Scottish Medicines Consortium has meanwhile approved semaglutide (Wegovy) for overweight adults who have cardiovascular disease, with the aim of reducing major cardiovascular events. The drug will be prescribed alongside diet and exercise as part of routine NHS Scotland care.
