GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs associated with increased hair‑loss risk

A recent study published in The BMJ examined type‑2 diabetes patients using GLP‑1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide (Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). Compared with patients on SGLT‑2 inhibitors, the GLP‑1 group had a 37 % higher risk of a diagnosed hair‑loss condition, and a 68 % higher risk versus those on DPP‑4 inhibitors. The authors note that the absolute increase in risk remains small.

The researchers explain that the hair loss is likely linked to rapid weight loss induced by the drugs, a phenomenon known as telogen effluvium. Dr. Abdulaziz Balwi, a hair‑transplant surgeon, said the side effect is termed “Ozempic hair” and, while generally not physically harmful, it can have significant psychosocial effects on patients’ confidence and quality of life. The finding underscores the need for clinicians to inform patients about this possible, though rare, adverse effect.
