GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs linked to lower violent crime rates in US study
Researchers at Rutgers University examined data from 821 American adults who had used glucagon‑like peptide‑1 (GLP‑1) receptor agonists such as Ozempic and Wegovy. The analysis found that current users of these weight‑loss and diabetes medications were less likely to commit violent crimes compared with former users. The reduction was most pronounced for crimes associated with impulsive behavior, while the effect for alcohol‑related offenses was weaker. The authors suggest that GLP‑1 drugs may influence brain reward and stress pathways, thereby improving impulse control. The findings could have implications for public‑health strategies and criminology research as the use of GLP‑1 medications expands.
