GLP‑1 weight‑loss injections linked to mental health effects and potential fuel savings for Brazil's Azul

Studies of tirzepatide, the active ingredient in so‑called "canetas emagrecedoras," confirm strong weight‑loss and glycaemic‑control benefits but also report notable psychological side‑effects. Users have described depressed mood, anxiety, fatigue, altered appetite, body‑image disturbances and heightened stress, which can aggravate or trigger depressive and anxious disorders. Experts note that the drug’s action on GLP‑1 and GIP receptors in the brain influences reward and satiety pathways, potentially disrupting emotional regulation and eating‑related coping mechanisms.

In Brazil, Azul airline CEO John Rodgerson said the growing use of GLP‑1 drugs, which cause passengers to lose roughly two kilograms each, could reduce the carrier’s fuel consumption by about R$3 million per month. Fuel accounts for roughly 30 % of Azul’s operating costs and has risen sharply due to the war in the Middle East. The airline is also reviewing flight frequencies and aircraft size to mitigate high fuel prices, and sees the weight‑loss trend as an additional lever for operational savings.
