Glucosamine supplement associated with accelerated Alzheimer's progression
A retrospective study led by researchers at the University of Florida and published in the journal Nature Metabolism examined health records from 2012 to 2024. The analysis found that older adults with mild cognitive impairment who reported taking the over‑the‑counter glucosamine supplement had a 25% higher likelihood of progressing to dementia compared with non‑users. Among participants already diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, glucosamine use was linked to a 25% increase in mortality risk during the study period.
The researchers cautioned that the findings show an association, not a proven cause, and emphasized that patients should consult their physicians before changing supplement use. Glucosamine, widely sold for joint pain relief, is extracted from shellfish or corn and is taken by millions worldwide.
