Glucose monitoring standards and prediabetes prevention

Medical experts are emphasizing the importance of blood glucose control to prevent the progression of metabolic diseases. In Argentina, specialist Jorge Tartaglione noted that fasting glucose levels should remain below 100 mg/dl. Values between 100 and 125 mg/dl indicate prediabetes, a critical warning stage. Without intervention, it is estimated that 70% of people with prediabetes will develop diabetes during their lifetime, and up to 90% may progress if left untreated. Key tools for monitoring include the glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test, which tracks sugar levels over a three-month period.

In Spain, a new national consensus from several major scientific societies, including SED and SEEN, recommends continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as the standard of care for type 2 diabetes patients using basal insulin. This shift aims to reduce the risks of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Research indicates that CGM can reduce HbA1c levels by 0.3% to 1.5% and significantly increase the time spent within the target glucose range.
