Glyphosate exposure linked to changes in honeybee behavior and brain chemistry

Research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology indicates that glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, affects the foraging activity and brain chemistry of honeybees. Scientists from Virginia Tech, including Margaret Couvillon and Laura McHenry, conducted studies using artificial feeding stations to observe these effects.

While exposure to glyphosate is typically not fatal to honeybees, the study suggests it may cause non-lethal impairments. Researchers compared the impact to the side effects of over-the-counter antihistamines, which may alleviate symptoms while inducing drowsiness. The findings highlight a need for further investigation and improved regulation regarding herbicide use in areas inhabited by pollinators.
