Güímar City Council faces controversy over repurposed sewage wells

The Güímar City Council is facing opposition from political groups Coalición Canaria, PSOE, and Unidas Podemos regarding the installation of 28 prefabricated concrete pieces in the Puertito area. Originally designed as sewage wells, these structures have been repurposed as planters containing palm trees.

Opposition leaders have raised concerns regarding the procurement process, compliance with accessibility regulations, and potential interference with emergency service access. The PSOE has formally requested information concerning the cost of the pieces, the legality of the acquisition under public contract laws, and whether an accessibility plan exists for ambulances.

In response, Councilor José Miguel Hernández defended the decision, stating the planters were installed to replace bollards that were being broken frequently. He asserted that the new placement increases space and beautifies the area without obstructing emergency vehicles.
