GMI orders two hydrogen-powered coastal vessels for Norway

GMI has ordered two hydrogen-powered coastal bulk carriers to advance zero-emission shipping in Norway. The vessels, each with a deadweight capacity of approximately 3,000 DWT, are scheduled to enter service in 2029.

Chowgule Shipyards in India will construct the newbuilds, which are intended to operate primarily in Norwegian coastal waters and fjord regions where zero-emission propulsion is increasingly prioritized to reduce environmental impact.

eCap Marine will provide the complete hydrogen system solution for both vessels. This includes compressed hydrogen storage systems, PEM fuel cell technology delivering 1.2 MW per vessel, and the necessary power management, control, and safety systems.
