GMO Internet Group shifts away from remote work recommendation

GMO Internet Group has announced a shift in its corporate policy, moving away from its previous stance of encouraging remote work. Masatoshi Kumagai, representative of the group, clarified that the decision does not constitute a blanket ban on working from home. Instead, the group is withdrawing its official recommendation for remote work, leaving the specific implementation and flexibility to the discretion of individual group companies.

Kumagai cited the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence as a primary driver for this change. He argued that to navigate the current AI-driven industrial revolution, employees need to engage in more frequent, high-density communication and creative decision-making that is best facilitated in person. The goal is to allow professionals to stimulate one another in an office environment to better adapt to technological shifts.

While the group is moving toward a principle of office attendance, flexibility will remain for employees with specific needs, such as childcare, nursing care, or medical requirements, provided that individual companies deem it productive.
