GMR Group maintains commitment to Sangley Point International Airport project

India-based GMR Group has reaffirmed its commitment to the Sangley Point International Airport (SPIA) project in Cavite, Philippines. Despite delays, the company is currently conducting traffic and financial studies and has performed several site visits over the last three months.

Progress is currently contingent on obtaining government clearances, specifically regarding the Philippine Navy, which occupies the former American naval base where the airport is planned. GMR business chair Srinivas Bommidala stated that the company is respecting sovereignty requirements and remains in continuous engagement with the government and the SPIA Development Consortium.

To accelerate the $11 billion project, the Philippine government established a technical working group via Administrative Order No. 44. Co-chaired by the Department of Transportation and the Philippine Reclamation Authority, the group is tasked with expediting permits, licenses, and authorizations. Once completed, the airport is expected to create up to 15,000 jobs and generate approximately $500 million in government revenue.
