GNACOPS calls for end to WAEC examination monopoly in Ghana

The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) has petitioned the Ministry of Education to end the 74-year monopoly held by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over public basic education assessments.

Executive Director Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah argues that introducing alternative examining bodies would increase transparency, improve accountability, and help prevent examination paper leakages. Gyetuah suggested that Ghana could adopt a model similar to Nigeria, which utilizes multiple assessment bodies like NECO alongside WAEC to maintain standards.

GNACOPS is also demanding a reform of WAEC's grading methodology. The association is calling for the replacement of the current Stanine grading system with a criterion-referenced model, where raw scores directly dictate grades rather than relying on predefined percentage quotas.
