Güngören, Istanbul building collapse forces evacuation of two neighboring apartments

During demolition work on a five‑storey building in Güngören's Özyurt Street, the structure unexpectedly collapsed, causing damage to the columns and walls of the two adjacent five‑storey buildings. Municipal crews evacuated residents and business owners from the affected blocks and from the damaged neighboring properties, which are also slated for demolition under a city‑wide urban‑renewal plan.

No injuries were reported. Shop owner İbrahim Şen described a sudden, earthquake‑like shaking and a cloud of dust, while local resident Bahattin Kuş explained that the building’s weak structural integrity led to an uncontrolled collapse that harmed the surrounding structures. The municipality plans to relocate the displaced occupants within about a month as part of the ongoing redevelopment project.
