Güngören unsafe apartment building sealed after demolition order as residents break seal

A four‑storey apartment block in the Güngören district of Istanbul was declared "dangerous to collapse" after municipal engineers found severe structural damage, including deep cracks, heavy corrosion of reinforcement and a risk of sudden floor migration. The building was ordered to be evacuated, demolished and sealed under the city’s zoning law.

Despite the seal, some residents forced the door open to retrieve personal items, and a few continued to live in the building. The municipality placed affected families in hotels for ten days and warned that the building’s load‑bearing columns are unsupported and could fail with minimal movement. As one neighbor, Ergün Usta, said, "Bu binada şu an kesinlikle oturulamaz; çünkü taşıyıcı kolonlar toprak üzerinde."
