Gönüllü village begins traditional organic rice harvest

In Gönüllü village, located in the Gercüş district of Batman, the harvest of organic rice with a registered geographical indication has begun. Due to the steep and rugged nature of the terrain, modern machinery is unable to access many of the fields, necessitating the use of traditional farming methods.

The community relies on the 'imece' system, a centuries-old tradition of collective labor and mutual aid, where neighbors work together in each other's fields. The process involves manual harvesting with sickles, often accompanied by Turkish and Kurdish folk songs.

Because motorized vehicles cannot reach certain areas, the harvested paddy is transported via horses and donkeys to safer locations. The processing includes threshing with tractors, manual separation of grains, sun-drying on rooftops, and final hulling in historic mills.
