GNPC Explorco advances Voltaian Basin drilling preparations

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and its subsidiary, GNPC Explorco, have advanced preparations for the first exploratory well in Ghana’s onshore Voltaian Basin. A high-level delegation recently inspected the proposed well location at Chegu in the Mion District to assess site readiness and identify necessary engineering works.

Samuel Opoku Arthur, Managing Director of GNPC Explorco, announced that construction of a 13.5-kilometre access road will begin in the coming weeks. This road is essential for transporting drilling rigs, heavy machinery, and equipment to the site, and will facilitate wellsite clearing and civil construction.

The project aims to test the hydrocarbon potential of the Voltaian Basin, a large inland sedimentary basin spanning parts of northern and central Ghana. During the site visit, the delegation met with the Chegu Naa to reaffirm their commitment to community engagement. The traditional authority expressed support for the project while emphasizing the need for transparent communication and respect for local traditions. GNPC Explorco stated it will implement environmental safeguards throughout the exploration programme.
