Portugal is facing a significant period of extreme weather, characterized by a heatwave that could last up to four weeks. The Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) has issued yellow heat warnings for 15 districts on the mainland and for the Madeira archipelago.

Temperatures in the interior, particularly in the South and the Tagus Valley, are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius, while relative humidity is forecast to remain below 30%. These conditions, combined with increasing wind intensity, have pushed rural fire danger to Very High and Maximum levels across several regions, including the Algarve.

The Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil (ANEPC) and the GNR have issued strict warnings and prohibitions to mitigate fire risks. Prohibited activities during high-risk periods include extensive burning, burning piles of debris, and using fire for cooking in rural areas. Additionally, certain agricultural tasks such as using brush cutters or mowing are restricted during peak danger periods.

Reflecting on the current year, the GNR reported 7,034 rural fires between January 1 and September 6, noting that 52.5% of these incidents were caused by negligent human behavior.
